Pelagic Perspectives | Maintenance Records Are Not Evidence of Condition

Preparing for an extended voyage reinforced a lesson that applies to every yacht owner: a maintenance record tells you what was done. It does not necessarily tell you the current condition of the equipment, or whether the work was completed to the standard you expect.

During our own pre-departure inspection, a closer look uncovered several issues that were not obvious from the maintenance history. The most concerning was the aftercooler. I had paid to have it serviced the previous year specifically to reduce the risk of a failure during extended cruising. While changing the engine zincs, our mechanic noticed dust around the aftercooler housing and decided to investigate further. Once removed, it became apparent that the aftercooler showed evidence of damage from a previous installation. It was sitting slightly out of alignment, and the housing had deteriorated significantly, to the point where it could no longer hold pressure.

Seeing it on the workbench made it immediately clear why visual verification matters. Had it failed during the voyage, it could have resulted in catastrophic engine damage.

We also discovered that the watermaker membrane had quietly reached the end of its service life, and that a heat exchanger zinc had likely not been properly secured during a previous service, allowing it to loosen and partially obstruct the heat exchanger.

The watermaker and heat exchanger issues were inconvenient. The aftercooler was different. It reinforced that the condition of critical systems should never be assumed, regardless of the maintenance history.
