Living aboard for an extended period changes how you think about yacht ownership.

While anchored in Grace Harbour, we noticed the boat had developed a slight list after drawing heavily from one freshwater tank. At the end of a full day of remote work, we started the generator to recharge the house batteries. It was also the perfect opportunity to run the watermaker, replenish the freshwater tank, and bring the boat back onto an even keel.

Fifteen minutes later, the recently installed watermaker boost pump failed.

Fortunately, we had anticipated that even a new component could fail and were carrying a spare. The replacement was straightforward, and before long the watermaker was back in service.

The experience reinforced an important lesson.

Preventive maintenance reduces the likelihood of failure, but it does not eliminate it. Mechanical components can fail unexpectedly even when they are new.

The difference between a minor inconvenience and a major disruption is rarely luck. More often, it is the result of decisions made well before the problem occurs.

Carrying the right spare, understanding how onboard systems work together, and investing in the areas that genuinely reduce operational risk are ownership decisions, not maintenance tasks.
