After years of yacht ownership, one lesson has consistently proven true: successful cruising is rarely about reacting to problems. It is about preparing before they occur.

One day in Desolation Sound reinforced that lesson in three different ways.

The first involved an intermittent water maker fault. At first glance, everything appeared normal, but a closer inspection revealed the seawater strainer was partially blocked, likely by jellyfish debris. What looked like a major mechanical issue turned out to be a simple maintenance problem.

The second involved communication. We had planned to remain at anchor for Canada Day, but I changed our plans without first discussing them with my wife. Long-term cruising places unique demands on relationships, and that day was a reminder that good crews communicate before they act.

The third involved preparation. We entered Tenedos Bay with only a general anchoring plan. When the anchorage proved busier than expected, we resisted the temptation to force a marginal decision and continued to Prideaux Haven instead. Ironically, what seemed like a compromise became one of the highlights of our trip.
